Artist & Muralist
Jorge Estévez earned his degree in Art from the Universidad de Chile (1990) and later graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence (1994). Throughout his career he has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and held important solo shows in Santiago de Chile, among them at Galería Carmen Waugh Casa Larga (1990), Galería AMS Marlborough (2003) and the CHACO 13 fair (2013).
During a significant stage of his career he taught art at several Chilean universities and directed the Posada del Corregidor gallery, run by the Municipality of Santiago, where he led a curatorial project aimed at bringing established artists and new generations together. In parallel, he created and hosted the television programme El Juicio de la Mirada (Canal 13 Cable), devoted to sharing and reflecting on the contemporary Chilean art scene.
His move to Spain in 2003 marked a turning point in his work. Since then he has devoted himself mainly to murals and large-format pictorial projects, collaborating regularly on interior design initiatives on an international scale. His work has been published in leading magazines such as House & Garden and Architectural Digest España.
His most intimate and personal work is defined by a pictorial realism that is more evocative than descriptive. He does not reproduce nature: he reinvents it. Monumental moons, nocturnal landscapes and figures suspended against dark backgrounds form a visual universe of his own, where light, silence and atmosphere become the protagonists. These works clearly reflect the sensibility that defines his current period.
